Walking down the dingy school halls,you sighed and shook your head whenever you heard people talking about their crush or how so-so was such an ass.Most people thought you were just jealous because you couldn't land a date,but you seriously didn't care.You could've cared less about the hottest new clothes or something like that.As you opened your locker,you wondered how people could stand living such dull lives.All they thought about was their reputation.You shook your head once more and picked up your binder for World History.Oh how you hated that class,but that's because of the teacher,Mrs.Race.She treated everyone like little kids and made history the most boring subject in the whole school.She was short and pudgy with a crazy eye.That crazy eye drove you insane,you never knew if she was looking at you or someone else.You plopped into your seat that was in the back,and got ready for a boring class.
"Class,"she said in that annoying voice,"Today we're going to pair up and go to the library to get some books on ancient Greece."As soon as she had said the word 'pair' everyone looked at their friends.
"But,I will pair you up and you must help your partner!"She said.Everyone,even you,groaned.You didn't want to be paired up with some idiot.You wanted to bang your head against the wall repeatedly.She started to call off names.
"Billie and Grace.John and Jon."And it went on like that,you didn't really pay attention until she called your name.
"(name) and Alfred."
"What?!"You said aloud.Luckily,everyone was talking too loudly for anyone to hear you.Great,now you were stuck with a jock,which meant you'd have to do all the work.What's worse is that he was one of the most popular kids in school.You banged you head against your desk.'Why me?'You thought.
"Now everybody,find your partner and go to the library quietly."She said.You got up with a lot of effort(Not really,it just seemed that way to you)and walked to his desk.He was sleeping.'Great,'you thought,'Now I have to wake him up!'You rolled your eyes at your petty thought.You lightly shook his shoulder.He groaned and turned his head the other way.You sighed and shook his shoulder a little harder.
"Alfred,wake up!"You yelled slightly.He mumbled 'burgers' in his sleep.That gave you an idea.
"Alfred,McDonald's just said their closing for good."You said.He jerked awake.
"What?!Noooo!"He yelled.
"Calm down!I only said that so you'd wake up!"You said,anger rolling off you in waves.It was then he noticed you.
"Who are you?"He asked,yawning.
"I'm you partner as of right now and we need to go to the library.And don't you think that I'm doing all the work!"You said.He just stared at you,which made you even more angry.You glared at him,waiting for him to process what you just said.He slowly got up and said,
"Are you new here?Because if you are,I could show you around."
You face palmed.
"Look,"You said in a dangerously calm voice,"I am not new here,I'm just not in your social group,because,unlike you and many more people,I actually care about my grades and I want to have a good job,so I don't have to work at Burger King all my life.Now,can we please go to the library before this period ends?"You looked up at him and you saw a flash of hurt in his eyes.
"Okay."He said in a quiet voice.You both walked down the halls in silence.When you reached the library you saw everyone talking instead of doing what they were supposed to do.You rolled your eyes and walked to the 'History' section of the library.'God,'You thought,'Why does everyone have to have such a primitive way of thinking?'You started to pull down books on ancient Greece and stuffed them in the crook of your arm.You took a deep breath of the musty book smell that you loved so much.Yes,you'd admit that you loved books more than people,but that's because you found books more exciting than real life,you loved fantasy the most.As soon as you had at least five books you turned around to hand Alfred one or two of the books you had collected and were surprised to see him holding and looking at some books.'Wow,'You thought,'Maybe humanity isn't as bad as I thought.'
"You got all the books you need?"You asked softly.He looked up and smiled.
"Finally,you're being nice to me.Looks like your not as mean as everyone says."He says.
"W-what?People say I'm mean?I'm not mean,they just live a one-track life!"You said quickly to defend your honor.He laughed an annoying laugh.
"You think so?"He said.
"Well of course!It's like the only thing on their mind is talking,eating,sleeping,and reproducing."You said.That only made him laugh harder until Mrs.Race came over and shushed him.He put his hand in front of his mouth,but giggles still came out.Your face flushed with embarrassment.
"A-and I thought you didn't know who I was."
"I was playing with you."He said.Your face got even more red at the thoughts that came into your mind.'Why did he have to say it like that?!'You thought.You shook your head,clearing it of the dirtiness that filled it.
"Come on,let's finish the assignment before Mrs.Race comes over and yells at us."You said,walking to an empty table.
~Timeskip~After school,nighttime~
As you lay in your bed you thought about Alfred.Every time you tried to think of something else,it came back to him.'What's wrong with me?!'You thought,'I can't possibly like him!He's one of the 'Popular Ones'!I'm just a bookworm.Not that I don't like being a bookworm,I just want to know what's wrong with me!'You soon fell asleep,letting your imagination run wild.
